Reducing Light Pollution can be accomplished with better designed streetlights

Energy Efficient Solutions to Light Pollution

As the world’s population grows, unfortunately so does the output of light pollution. Light pollution is defined as, “the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light.” The problem of light pollution affects the environment around us, including plants and animals. Often times, light pollution distracts from or completely inhibits our ability to see the stars in the night sky. But perhaps more bothersome, light pollution can flood homes with unwanted sources of bright light and waste large amounts of unnecessary energy consumption.

In fact, street lights are the highest producers of light pollution on the planet.

Light pollution consists of problems with:

  • Glare– excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort
  • Skyglow– brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas
  • Light trespass– light falling where it is not intended or needed
  • Clutter– bright, confusing and excessive groupings of light sources

Today, because of the advancements researchers from Mexico and Taiwan made in 2013, LED street lighting systems are much more readily available. The team of scientists  who invented a new LED street lighting system in 2013 discovered that because LED’s generally use about 10% of the energy of a traditional light bulb and last approximately 30x longer, their new LED street lighting system greatly improved energy efficiency. In turn, this not only helps the environment and reduces carbon emissions, it saves money.

Since then the advantages of LED lights have become well known to not only scientists, but smart minded business people as well as state and federal municipalities.

Advantages to using LED’s in street lights:

  • Quick to turn on- no warm up needed
  • No use of ultraviolet light- which attracts bugs
  • Directional Light rather than a diffused glow
  • Can be adjusted to be dimmed when necessary

In addition, cities can use LED’s to make their streets safer. LED’s can be set to increase in brightness when a pedestrian walks by or integrated into a system that alerts city officials when lights need maintenance. LED’s can also be set to blink or light up in patterns to signal emergencies or different city wide events.

One of the products that we endorse here at Monterey Energy is the KAX1 LED Area luminaire. This system can be used to update outdoor lighting. the KAX1 is easily installed and easily programmable.
